If you studied law in Quebec or as part of the Canadian civil law program at the University of Ottawa — and want to practice in a common law jurisdiction in Canada — you must follow the NCA process. Only then will you be able to apply to the Canadian Law Societies of provinces and territories other than Quebec. The very first step was to apply to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada for an assessment of my legal credentials. This is a full application that requires the submission of all transcripts (including high school studies) that must be sent directly to the CSF by the educational institution. This means that you can be eligible for admission to the bar in any Canadian common law jurisdiction through a single process. To do this, you must have legal qualifications from another country or a Canadian civil law degree. But first, you may be wondering a little about me and why the hell I decided to leave my life and career in the United States behind. I graduated from law school in 2012 and passed the New York Bar exam. After working in New York for two years, I moved to Washington, D.C. and joined an amazing legal services organization.

I had been happily working there for three years when my fiancé (now husband) and I went on a weekend trip to Toronto. We fell in love with the city and met amazing people who would soon become some of our closest friends. We went home with our eyes glued and wondered if we could really be the Americans who moved to Canada. I hesitated, to say the least. I loved my job and thought I had planned my future. Not to mention the time, effort and money it would take to get a licence in Ontario. Nevertheless, after careful consideration, we committed ourselves to the idea and I set to work. With sophisticated strategies and practical solutions, our goal is not only to solve our clients` immediate legal problems, but also to anticipate future problems and set the stage for long-term success.

We pride ourselves on the fact that our clients frequently come back to us when they encounter legal challenges, not only because of our extensive practice and commitment to clients, but also because of our reputation for consistently positive results. Cost: $$$$ Immigration fees and legal fees (you don`t want to know) Navigating the NCA process can be challenging. Our goal is to foster strong professional connections with NCA alumni who now have successful legal practice and the legal profession as a whole, with a vision to foster meaningful mentoring relationships for NCA students. The Internationally Educated Lawyers (FTLP) Program is a one-year post-baccalaureate certificate designed to help you meet NCA training requirements. Mandatory courses include the fundamentals of Canadian law, professional development, constitutional law, crime: law and procedure, administrative law and ethical advocacy. The program includes a unique one-year course in professional development (including professional writing and oral communication skills, resume writing for intern positions, interview techniques, marketing and promotion, networking events, and mentoring), student support and mentoring, and internship and work placement assistance to provide you with a comprehensive path to integration into the service market.

The NCA assesses the qualifications of all internationally educated law graduates, whether they are Canadian citizens who have studied law abroad, newcomers to Canada with foreign legal training, or individuals planning to emigrate to Canada. Find out if you can apply. Once your application for a articling exemption has been approved, you must complete a mandatory three-day course on Professional Liability and Practice in Ontario (OPCP). I decided to take the Barrister and Solicitor exams in March 2019. What to expect: Exams are separated by two weeks, all multiple choice and open book. Very different (and much more manageable) than the New York Bar exam. The Law Society provides indexes with study materials and, in my opinion, that`s all you need to study and succeed. Read the material, create compressed plans/flowcharts/etc., and learn how to use the indexes provided by taking practical exams. You don`t need to join an indexing group and create your own index. I studied completely on my own. Thank you for sharing your story, Stacy! This comes in handy when I`m preparing for my NCA exams. I`m called to the bar almost exactly two years after starting this process – and I`m still not done! It turns out that finding a job is not an easy task for an internationally trained lawyer. But I`ve come this far and there`s absolutely nothing stopping it. The NCA assesses the qualifications of internationally trained lawyers and issues assessments that set out the requirements that a candidate must meet before qualifying to enter the bar admission process in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada.

In many cases, the NCA requires candidates to successfully complete certain subjects by taking certain courses at a Canadian law school or by passing the NCA challenge examinations. After passing the NCA exams, the next step is to apply to the ORL licensing process, which covers everything needed to become a licensed lawyer (articling exams, lawyer and lawyer exams, good character, etc.).
